Historic Preservation - First Railroad in Virginia with Pressure Grouting

Pressure Grouting was efficiently and economically used to stabilize loose stones in this stone arch tunnel and fill voids behind the tunnel walls. Cement grout was job mixed and pumped 250 feet to the tunnel. Each injection port was located in the mortar joints of the stones. Approximately 300 bags of cement and 10 tons of sand were mixed to form a flowable grout that was pumped into the mortar joints of the tunnel walls.

FIRST RAILROAD IN VIRGINIA

"Just south of here are the earthen remains and stone culvert of the Chesterfield Railroad, the first railroad in Virginia and the second in the United States. The tramway's trains were operated both by gravity and by horse and mule power. Built in 1831 to haul coal from the Midlothian Mines to the wharves at Manchester, the tramway remained in operation until the Richmond-Danville Railroad opened in 1851"
